Read on for more information on this common condition, and discover how our products can help to relieve the amount of stress you’re placing on your feet and aid you in your quest to lead a full, active life!
Metatarsalgia is the term given to any generalised pain in the metatarsal bones located in the ball of the foot.
It is characterised by sharp, aching or burning pains just behind the toes; tingling or numbness in the toes themselves; and a feeling of having a pebble or stone in your shoe. The pain associated with metatarsalgia is often worse during and after exercise but can subside after a period of rest.
Metatarsalgia is usually caused by overstraining the biomechanics of the feet, particularly through running, jumping and other activities that place a lot of stress on the lower limbs.
You are also at risk of developing metatarsalgia if:
Though metatarsalgia is rarely a symptom of a more serious issue, the pain and discomfort that stems from it can certainly begin to affect your mobility. This is why it’s so important to not only treat the condition as soon as you can, but also take active steps to prevent it.
Resting up, applying ice to the affected area for up to 20 minutes at a time, and taking over-the-counter pain medication will all help to reduce the pain in the short term. But if you want to counter metatarsalgia once and for all, you may need to look into changing your footwear, or wearing supportive insoles in your shoes. Doing so will take the pressure off your metatarsal bones and prevent unwanted stress to the balls of your feet.
OrthoSole’s uniquely designed orthotic insoles for metatarsalgia come with a full set of arch and metatarsal pads and arch supports, which can be customised according to the level of cushioning you need to eradicate your symptoms.
For maximum benefit we recommend purchasing our Max Cushion for your Trainers & Work Boots (shoes with that bit of room) and then our Thin Style for your tight fitting / formal shoes. No matter what shoes you wear making sure the support is there!
We recommend the firmest piece possible, that is most comfortable for you. For more guidance on how to choose the right combination of arch and metatarsal pieces, read all about the differences between our core products.
