What is supination?
If your feet roll outwards excessively while you’re standing, walking or running, you have supination. You may also hear supination referred to as underpronation; it’s the complete opposite to overpronation, which is more common and is explained in more detail here.
Supinating isn’t dangerous in itself – but it does put a great deal of stress on the ankle, making it more prone to sprains and other injuries. Supination can also lead to an increased risk of:
- Pain in the ball of the foot (metatarsalgia)
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles tendonitis
- Shin splints
- Bunions and calluses
- Stress fractures in the feet and legs
How can you tell if you are supinating?
The clue could be in a frequently worn pair of shoes. Look at where the most wear is occurring – if the outer part of your sole is worn down, you are a supinator. If you want a professional opinion, ask your doctor or podiatrist to perform a quick analysis.
Genetics play a role in the development of supination, but other causes include:
- Wearing ill-fitting, overly rigid and/or unsupportive footwear
- Poor posture and/or misalignment elsewhere in the body
- Bad form whilst exercising
- Old injuries that have weakened the bones and tissues in the feet or ankles
- Constant or excessive impact on hard surfaces during exercise
- Too much exercise
- Not enough exercise
- Standing for long periods at a time
What can you do to correct the way you stand and walk?
Regardless of whether you were born as a supinator or you have developed the condition over time, it’s important to accommodate for your unusual gait pattern to avoid injuries and prevent other problems from developing.
Certain exercises can help to loosen any tight muscles and strengthen the tendons and soft tissues in the feet.
