Most of us will experience stinging and throbbing in and around our calf muscles from time to time.
But taking extra care before, during and after exercise could prevent shin splints from developing to the point where they have a significant impact on your training routine or your overall mobility. And wearing OrthoSole insoles for shin splints in your regular footwear will make doubly sure that your legs are well supported, your feet and ankles are fully stabilised, and your musculoskeletal system doesn’t have to ensure added shock from heavy impact with the ground.
What are shin splints – and what causes them?
Other factors increase your chances of damaging these connective tissues, too:
- Flat fleet have a part to play in shin splint development. Collapsed arches typically lead to overpronation, which strains the shinbone
- Unsupportive shoes with little to no shock absorbing qualities will fail to protect the tibia from impact, resulting in further damage
- Unstable ankles and hips will place added stress on your legs
Failing to warm up and cool down properly before and after exercise could also increase your chances of developing shin splints.

How can they be treated?
If you are already experiencing sharp, stinging sensations in your shins, there are other things you can do to speed up the healing process.
The first and most important thing you must do is rest. Your muscles and tissues need time to heal. If you need to, you can apply ice to your shins several times a day for 20 minutes or so; this can help to keep the swelling down and temporarily relieve the discomfort. Over-the-counter painkillers may also take the edge off the pain.
However, one of the easiest ways to treat shin splints is to wear orthotic insoles on a daily basis.
How can insoles help to prevent shin splints?
Wearing orthotic insoles will not only improve your symptoms – it will also stop shin splints from occurring in the first place.
