The most common causes of ankle pain are sprains and other localised injuries. Sprains occur when the tissues that hold the ankle bones together are rolled, twisted or turned in an awkward or unnatural way, often during sport or intense physical activity.
Some people also report ankle pain as a symptom of other foot-related conditions – including Achilles tendonitis and ruptured tendons – and nerve damage. It can also occur as a result of arthritis (osteoarthritis), gout, blocked blood vessels or an infection in the ankle joint, although these causes are rare.
Ankle pain can often be accompanied by:
In some cases, ankle pain can be mildly inconvenient for a few days, and will then start to improve on its own as the sprain or injury starts to heal. In others, it can take a lot longer for the ankle to recover, leading to reduced mobility and a much more significant impact on your everyday life.
In the first instance, you should try:
If the pain doesn’t start to subside after a few days, your doctor may suggest a foot or ankle brace, which will help to realign the joint and better distribute your body weight. In extreme cases, steroid injections can be used to reduce pain and stiffness in the affected area – but these are normally only used as a last resort.
While following the treatment advice above, you should also wear OrthoSole insoles inside your regular shoes.
All our Max Cushion insoles, Thin Style insoles are suitable for customers who are suffering with ankle pain. These inserts come with metatarsal and arch support pieces, which can be adjusted as necessary to provide you with the most suitable level of support.
For maximum benefit we recommend purchasing our Max Cushion for your Trainers & Work Boots (shoes with that bit of room) and then our Thin Style for your tight fitting / formal shoes. No matter what shoes you wear making sure the support is there!
We would suggest using Firm arch and metatarsal pieces wherever possible, as these will give you the most effective cushioning – but if you find them to be too uncomfortable or intrusive, you can swap them out for Light or Medium inserts in a matter of seconds.
