Insoles for Arthritis

Did you know that OrthoSole insoles can help to reduce foot pain in people who have developed arthritis – and specifically osteoarthritis – in their feet?

Here, we describe the signs and symptoms of foot-related arthritis and run you through a few tried-and-tested treatment options – including wearing customisable orthotic inserts, like the ones available from OrthoSole!

What is arthritis, and how can it affect your feet?

Arthritis in its most common form, osteoarthritis, causes the cartilage between your bones to wear down over time. This leads to stiff, swollen, tender and often painful joints that are hard to move.

Some people report feeling popping, cracking and grating sensations in the areas that are most affected, and it’s not unusual for bone spurs to form around the joints in the body that have lost much of their protective cushioning. The pain associated with arthritis and osteoarthritis tends to be worse during activity or at the very end of the day.

It’s thought that up to 8.5 million people in the UK alone are suffering from joint pain as a result of osteoarthritis, and as many as half of people aged 65 and over have evidence of the condition.

Osteoarthritis predominantly affects the hands, knees, hips and spine – but some sufferers do experience pain in their feet, and report swollen ankles and toes.

Who can get arthritis?

Arthritis can occur in anyone, at any time of life. However, you are more likely to develop the condition if you:

  • Are aged 50 or over
  • Are overweight or obese
  • Are particularly active – for example, you use the same joints over and over again during fitness training or playing your favourite sport
  • Have weak muscles
  • Have certain metabolic diseases, like diabetes and hemochromatosis
  • Have a family history of arthritis

What are the treatment options?

There is no cure for arthritis, and it can be tricky to treat it. However, it is hugely important to take steps to manage the condition, as many of the side effects associated with arthritis can lead to further health problems like obesity, diabetes and heart disease, not to mention an increased risk of falls due to reduced mobility and weaker muscles.

Your doctor will be able to prescribe pain relievers and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to help you manage the pain and inflammation, and some patients respond well to counterirritants, corticosteroids, platelet-rich plasma and other tried-and-tested drugs. Regular exercise, specialist physical therapies and maintaining a healthy weight will help you manage your symptoms – as will wearing OrthoSole insoles for arthritis!
